… I remember (some 35 years ago) when I painted I was “diluting” my oil paint (when it was old-er ) with a linseed oil. I,to this day, remember a distinct nutty-sweet smell of it. And yes you’re right. My grandparent’s gristmill was over 200 years old and I’ve never seen them to paint a “new coat “ on doors or windows.
I just learned that you can use cheap vegetable oil instead of bar and chain oil for your chainsaw. This video tells of a logging crew that did this b/c the landowner didn't want synthetic oils on his land: https://youtu.be/WSLyMRnhPrQ?si=GtmCdoP5OsHuG2VP .
I've saved all of my old motor oil in case the grid goes down. There's a guy who also asks for it on nextdoor.com, so he knows what to do with it.
And making me homesick for Faluröd paint or rather the nostalgia of the copper mine and all the red houses with white details.
Indeed mineral rich mine sludge with linseed oil. I love it, as you say paint it on and then when needed just coat over again, the wood is still alive and no (not much) prep needed. They were the days, no mold, no issues.
This is the first time I've seen water used as a thinning agent.
I understand the chemistry of how they got the color.
How can you not love a product called Rödfärg?
I HAD NO IDEA THAT OCHRE WAS BACTERIA SLUDGE!!!!
"Iron ochre is a reddish-brown sludge that forms when iron bacteria combine with oxygen and other minerals in the soil. It can clog drainage systems and sump pumps, leading to potential water damage in homes."
I'm curious what antifungal they recommend before using their paint. I've seen a number of references to Borax. I doubt that was in use in the 1500s in Sweden.
I wonder wonder… many old Swedish houses (as in still standing) tends to be north of Stockholm (south of Stockholm (broadbrush) you see more stone houses) = will most likely be built from pine wood. Wonder if the pine sap and resin had strong enough properties to stave off fungus and mold and critters?!
As an aside the wooden church in Kiruna, not terribly old just over 100 years, is one of the largest wooden strukturer in sweden and it’s just had a multi-year project to move it lock stock and barrel about 5000m. This and many other building and residents are being relocated due to the old mining activity now threatening part of the city.
I've lost a lot of pine trees to moth grubs that are adapted to bore into the trunks and eat anthill trails through them, so the sap/resin is a deterrant for some insects but not all. When cut a pine tree will absorb a lot of water from the ground and rot will set in despite the sap/resin unless it is protected against water infiltration by the use of oil.
It's always a delicate balance.
The sap/resin is used for what we call synthetic caulk today. Yet another formula that I have to replicate. The glazing on windows is made of chalk and oil an for some properly maintained structures can last 100 years before you need to reglaze.
The longevity of this stuff fascinates me since latex paint didn't even last a season.
I hope they numbered the logs for the church because someone like me would have two left in the pile and go: "I wonder where these were supposed to go?"
When Patrick wrote " I smiled" I was expecting him to tell us that the bug farts in the miasma from the bug infested linseed oil had infected his mind to make it Seem like it smelt good....when really the smell was more like rotting road kill.
I almost set my storage and my house on fire with boiled linseed soake rags that I threw haphazardly and ignorantly on the ground in the storage shed. I caught it smoldering. I had gallons of oilbased sealers in that storage. It would have been an inferno had it caught on fire. PHEW! No one taught me about boiled linseed oil being capable of spontaneous combustion. In this instance ignorance was a potential curse!
Having worked in the 'wood' industry since age 16, you pick up a lot of information. So I knew about Spontaneous Human (I mean: OIL) combustion early on but never understood the chemistry. It was working with chemicals that put me over the edge that took my entire life to recover.
ALL FOR VANITY.
Not the dresser with the mirror but asshole customers who want toxins on their belongings.
There was (obviously) NOTHING WRONG with raw linseed oil. There IS nothing wrong with it now. The NPCs are sold the next new thing and they suck it down like shit sandwiches asking for seconds and it creates a cascading effect that then ruins the idiots who work wood (like me) who pay with their lives for other people's vanity.
Ignorance is a CONTROL MECHANISM of the Cunt Trollers.
Imagine what would happen if it did burn?
No insurance because it says not to discard rags right there on the can.
Who (besides me) even READS A CAN?
Who (besides me) even knows what polymerization via oxidation is?
So, you would be out money and liable for collateral damage and then EVERYONE would have to rebuild and buy new.
DISASTER CAPITALISM.
All because they insure that people don't know Jack Shit.
Jack said to say: "Hi" and don't swear the rags. It's a lesson you will NEVER forget.
Speaking of quality of products. I love oil based paints. I painted my cabinets and window sills with oil paints. They look fantastic and perform fantasticly. Paints are not the only product gone bad.
1979 was the year I started my tile and stone installation trade. I remember that back then Customs Building Products carried cement ONLY based grouts labeled 1500 series. Then the industry started selling grouts modified with acrylic and latex. I hate these grouts. Whoever pushed these synthetic chemicals onto the construction industry they were sold as being BETTER than. Better my ass!!!
In most cases NOTHING beats a properly mixed cement only based grout. The ratios of volume of water to aggregate being mixed, duration of mixing and speed of mixing the batch. Using proper grouting method for specific installation conditions which vary depending on the type of material being grouted and lastly proper curing done. Curing being a very crucial and key step of the process to ensure the grout will reach its maximum strenght.
Heck, 2000+ year old Roman structures still have ceramic and mosaic tile where grout has higher tensile/compression strength and abrasion resistance than some steel.
I remodeled houses built in the 50', 60's and 70's where the tiled kitchen counter tops still had beautiful white and solid grout in the joints. Latex and acrylic based grouts fail in few years.

Oh interesting I’ve learnt more too!

I am glad you smiled. Good for the soul. I do hope your mixture works out.
Thanks.
Being forced to learn chemistry due to chemical allergies has a double-edged sword return on investment.
To master gaming the game .... Curse, Ridicule, Mock & <SMILE>
Post grievances, making smiling contagious. :)
Use phrases such as "The Powers that Pee (all over us) " .... BONUS points!!

See what you've done to me Patrick!!!!!!
Lololol l, Yeah, THAT would have been the twist we would be waiting for....THAT shoe never dropped ... or should I say....THAT bug never farted! Lol

abducted but I can't be absolutely sure it happened. I can't be sure of anything anymore.
what do you mean?
I'm not sure we're even having this conversation. I don't know if these mashed potatoes are really here. I don't know if you even exist.
I can only assure you that I do.
Well, thanks buddy. Unfortunately I can't give you the same assurance about me."
I've never seen a better description of a SIM inside of a SIM outside of Chris Carter's Harsh Realm that predated the Matrix.
Maybe I did drink the oil with a turp chaser but have no memory for the event.
How can anyone Exit Stage Left if they are dyslexic?
ALWAYS laugh at the devil. It saps the bastard's power.
We're going down anyways. Might as well shine the fuckers on.
