The ancients believed that it was the heart that was the creator and instigator of, at least, words and actions (Hellish actions at that). The view was that it was not the brain; rather what the man was self-pleased to integrate into his faith -- because even science, evolution (unfolding) and atheism requires a strange sort of (highly negative) bet -- a gamble. Modern and post-moderns have vivisected the heart.
This far along in the ancient curse I rather doubt science -- intellectual knowledge -- will (ever) deliver us from this heart-centered "death" (of these people and) of some of us who may give into becoming these people. It not so much about who is dumber. The heart is no longer alive. It's "dead in spirit," as they say. So, I don't think we're in Hell, or not yet anyway. Maybe in our mindful status we're just able to look over to the wall (for now) and into the darkness beyond it. We see only a tiny-sample portion of the wavelengths, and we can not yet tell (of/if) the full-on horror & terror that awaits the one who relies upon his own logical intellect and who refuse to deal with his own conscience.
The adversary has the planet as his front porch, but the Gates of Hell are locked from the Inside.
